if you look close you can see one of the tiny blossoms emerging at the center of this bud (no bug here - but you can bet that they are not far off) Posted by Hello

Mr Teul called this the "bird plant" which when using the numerous small flowers that will come out of this bud, one can catch certain birds (the bug is one of the half a zillion different unnamed insects in search of a human to bite Posted by Hello

just another shot of the orange heliconiaPosted by Hello

this is another variety of the heliconia - they are all related to the banana Posted by Hello

this is another type of the heliconia (I finally found the correct spelling)

this website has some basic information about the heliconia

Website for Southern Belize Information

Kathy found this site that has some neat information about our area. Check out the various links.

we still have some "finish-fitting" to do but I really like the joints that we made - the 8X8's are rough cut santa maria and they are VERY heavy Posted by Hello

you would almost get the idea that we knew what we were doing (but please don't yield to the temptation to believe that - 'cause we are truly making this up as we go) - 2X10 floor joists come next - followed by 2X6 santa maria tongue and groove flooring. The house itself will be a 20+ft X 40 ft "thatch" (which is both a description of (1) the type of house and (2) specifically the type of roofing material (leaves of the cahoon palm)Posted by Hello

we managed to get most of the 8X8 timbers in place on saturday - we should finish that project on monday and get started on the floor joists Posted by Hello

this fruit is called soursop - I really don't have the whole story yet, but it apparently is a good thing - and as new info becomes available I will pass it along Posted by Hello

Kathy multi-tasking under the mango tree - studying her Watchtower, scratching the dogs back, and binoculars and spotting scope at the ready - "what a gal" - nice socks too! ( a new approach in the ongoing anti-bug program) Posted by Hello

the bible talks about everyone sitting under their own fig tree in the new system of things - in Belize it will likely be under your own mango tree - there are many kinds and they truly "bear much fruit" - and the fruit is as sweet as any peach you ever ate  Posted by Hello

one of the parents giving the cameraman the evil eye Posted by Hello

we string our hammocks under a large Mango tree and there are several nests in it - this is the nest of a yellow-green vireo - four babies and two very dutiful parents Posted by Hello

here she is - zero-ing in on some unsuspecting winged creature - she loves her new spotting scope Posted by Hello

One of Kathy's favorite bird-watching spots is on the roof of the hurricane shelter - you can see for miles - the floor level to our house will be another 3 feet higher  Posted by Hello

Fernandez has a great sense of humor - but doesn't really like his picture taken - Cleo really likes him - and so do I Posted by Hello

This is my friend Fernandez and his sister Gina. Fernandez and I are studying the Bible together and he and his sister came to our meeting last week. After the meeting we went to the farm where we hung out for awhile. Here Fernandez is drinking some coconut milk while his sister uses a machette to get some for herself - there is a real art to doing surgery on a coconut . Posted by Hello

this is another type - I'll try to get a better picture of these - they also come in a yellow Posted by Hello

There are a number of different halaconias that are flowering at present - and they are just beautiful Posted by Hello

yesterday Kathy found this little critter (about two inches long) and I was amazed with its color and complexity - nice red and white racing stripe, and the dual antenas are a really nice touch - I still don't know which end is the front. The hairy looking things have barbs on them and when I touched this guy some of them became imbedded in my finger - the next day there was a very angry and painful welt that wouldn't go away till I removed the very small pieces. I'll not make that mistake again =( Posted by Hello
